In a short video performance, I staged an experiment playing the national anthem of my home country while tapping my mouth with transparent tape. The piece aims to expose the feeling of being silent in relation to the country where speaking up and expressing one's truth can be life-threatening.
Without anticipating a strong reaction to the anthem before listening, I realized that it evoked a myriad of complex feelings. Traditionally played every New Year's Eve at midnight, uniting citizens and making the first minutes of the new year extremely patriotic, the tunes hold memories of the comfort of my parent’s home. However, it now also serves as a reminder of the deepest wounds related to the terrible events initiated by the government.
